Water Hammer, Evaluation & Alleviation

The scares water resource is treated at high cost and transferred at high energy and
operating cost to the customer. The efficiency of the transfer system is influenced by its
original design requirement, system’s age, the capacity and control. The current demand may
exceed the original design parameters and require it to operate outside these parameters, be it
pressure or flow; the system’s age could influence operating pressure and flow capacity.
The location of pipes may be uncertain. Due to the change in system’s demand the control
logic may also influence the efficiency.
Sentinel Water Services offers a full evaluation of the overall system based on the available
information as well as the enhancement of information through pressure and flow profiles,
location of pipe route using pipe detection equipment. The flow coefficients can also be validated.
The pipeline analysis software available enables Sentinel Water Services to evaluate the
system for known and potential demand conditions under steady state flow as well as dynamic
flow conditions. Such evaluation of the system allows the operational manager to review available
capacities, optimize pumping costs, increase efficiencies and manage losses. Pressure control
required by water loss managers can be simulated and the impact thereof evaluated on a
model to compare the anticipated with the actual results and the economics thereof
adjusted accordingly. The control valve settings can be simulated and after site setting and
adjustments the model can be updated to keep the system calibrated.
The calibrated system allows effective new customer demand control and the impact thereof on resources.
